This week I share a summary of Nature’s editorial on the twelfth SDG: Responsible consumption and production. Much progress has been made in sustainability on the production side. Consumption, meanwhile, is rising, canceling out those gains. Internal combustion engines are a good example. Several technologies have improved fuel efficiency, but consumer demand (and the automotive industry's promotion) for heavier vehicles has mitigated any impact on carbon emissions. Other industries have similar histories.
