Hundreds of millions of people go hungry as conflict affects food supplies. There is also growing evidence that food producers are exploiting the situation to increase their profits. Weber and his co-authors sampled a group of U.S. companies in these sectors and found that, in 2022, profits were responsible for as much inflation as wages, if not more (I. M. Weber and E. Wasner Economics Department Working Paper Series 343; 2023).
