“It started with an email. I was sitting in the living room of my family’s acreage on Treaty 6 territory, utterly unaware of the journey I was about to embark upon. We can never know such things in advance, can we?”

I know that observation biases are super important for Kuiper Belt science. Remember Planet 9? I wrote a lot about how observation biases have made a false signal: theconversation.com/why-astron

Now we have a new observation bias: due to geometry and the orbits companies choose, certain times of night and certain times of year will have more satellite streaks than others. Now we have to try to account for that bias too, while private companies try to keep all their satellite properties secret.

What could possibly go wrong?

"About 10% of the particles floating around the stratosphere now come from the aerospace industry, and we don't know if this could impact the climate."

"In the past year, the amount of collision-avoidance maneuvers that needed to happen with the #Starlink constellation were an order of magnitude greater than they were in the past five years combined."

We should turn all cargo ships into sailboats again. Almost zero emissions plus having to wait a month for your amazon order would incentive local business.
But above all that: Just imagine the amazing look of that beasts.

Well, that's also true for capitalism and yet here we are

Wikipedia: Kessler syndrome

"The #KesslerSyndrome (also called the #KesslerEffect, collisional cascading, or ablation cascade), proposed by #NASA scientist Donald J. Kessler in 1978, is a scenario in which the density of objects in low Earth orbit (LEO) due to space pollution is high enough that collisions between objects could cause a cascade in which each collision generates space debris that increases the likelihood of further collisions. In 2009 Kessler wrote that modeling results had concluded that the debris environment was already unstable, 'such that any attempt to achieve a growth-free small debris environment by eliminating sources of past debris will likely fail because fragments from future collisions will be generated faster than atmospheric drag will remove them'. One implication is that the distribution of debris in orbit could render space activities and the use of satellites in specific orbital ranges difficult for many generations."
