Pollution of the air we breathe is one of the negative effects associated both directly and indirectly with our dependence on fossil fuels. The particulate content of the air was possibly responsible for up to 8.9 million additional deaths in 2015—more than 1/1000th of the human population. In comparison, deaths attributed to tobacco were 1.9 million.
